Mike grew up in Iva, South Carolina and graduated Crescent High School in 1984. He attended Furman University on a football scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1988. While at Furman, Wilson was a member of the varsity football and track teams. He also holds an MBA from Winthrop University where he graduated with honors in 2003. He is a graduate of Leadership Anderson, Riley Institute Diversity Leadership Initiative, and Leadership South Carolina.

Mike worked for Duke Energy for 25 years where he held several positions at Duke Energy’s Charlotte corporate office working in regulatory affairs, planning, and marketing. In 2004, Mike moved back to the Upstate to work in Government and Community Relations where he served as District Manager in the Upstate region from 2006-2014. In November 2014, Mike joined Furman as the Executive Director of Alumni and Parent Engagement. In 2019, Mike joined Johnson Controls as a Solutions Consultant in their Sustainable Infrastructure Team. 

Mike is a former board member of the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce, Clemson Area Chamber of Commerce, Innovate Anderson, Senior Solutions, Anderson Area YMCA, and the Anderson County United Way, Tri County Tech Foundation, South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, Greenville Symphony Orchestra, Governor’s School of the Arts Foundation and past-president of the Anderson Rotary Club and a former president of the Wren Youth Association. 

Mike and his wife Jill have three children: Sarah - age 25, Owen – 23, and Eli - 20.
